High Court to hear judicial review application by ZI Publications

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court will hear a judicial review application by ZI Publications Sdn Bhd and its director Mohd Ezra Mohd Zaid which seeks to challenge his 2012 arrest as well as the seizure of 180 copies of a book. High Court (Appellate and Special Powers) judge Justice Kamaludin Md Said fixed Aug 28 for the hearing of the application. ZI Publications and Mohd Ezra’s counsel Farhan Haziq Mohamad told reporters later that the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) did not wish to file an appeal against the Court of Appeal’s decision last month.

On Apr 26, Court of Appeal judge Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat ordered for the judicial review application to be heard before a new High Court judge, saying that the previous High Court judge had erred in dismissing the application. Mohd Ezra and ZI Publications are challenging his May 2012 arrest by Jais and the seizure of 180 copies of a book titled “Allah, Kebebasan dan Cinta”. ZI Publications is the publisher of the 388-page Malay translation of an English book titled “Allah, Liberty and Love”, written by Canadian author Irshad Manji.

On May 29, 2012, Jais enforcement officers raided ZI Publications’ office in Merchant Square, Petaling Jaya, and seized 180 copies of the book which was deemed to be against Islamic law.

They also arrested Mohd Ezra and brought him before a Lower Syarie Court judge in Shah Alam and only freed him after he posted bail.
