I don’t usually care for overtly floral perfumes as they make me headachey but this fragrance is lovely. It smells ‘soft’ like lying in a bed of Roses which appears to me to be one of the top notes. The bottle itself is iconic and the fragrance is strong so you only need to wear a little of it. It also has lasting power and will keep you sweetly scented all day. It is good value for money too as per my latter comment.

    Je T’aime Paris!, 29 Sept. 2011

Paris is an Yves Saint Laurent fragrance, and I must admit that at the time I received this gift, I was already a fan of their perfumes, Rive Gauche in particular. Paris is a floral perfume, but is by no means a light fragrance. I absolutely adored it the first time I used it, but the strong, heady nature of this scent, as well as its overwhelming sweetness, won’t be to everyone’s taste. I believe that this perfume was created in the 1980’s and it definitely has characteristics of many perfumes of that era, being a classic, rather than a modern, fragrance.

The packaging, in my opinion is classic, stylish and really reflects what the product ius all about. The box containing the perfume is a salmon pink colour, with bold black and gold angular designs on it, which give it an art deco feel. The bottle that I have is the 50ml bottle, and I must admit, I am not overly keen on the design of the bottle, and don’t feel that it continues the theme of the outer box. I was expecting something angular and stylish, but the bottle is quite round and squat, resembling a pineapple, or hand grenade! The spray function of the top of the bottle is not particularly effective either, and I find that when I press it, most of the perfume runs down my fingers rather that where I want it to go. Also, I would have preferred a finer mist when spraying this, as I find that the bottle can be a bit “squirty”, and concentrate the scent in just one area, whereas when I apply a perfume like this, I like to spritz it into the surrounding air and walk through it, enveloping myself in fragrance.

The scent is described as floral, and is made up of the following layers:

    Base: Amber, musk and iris
Middle: Moss, violet and ylang ylang
Top: Mimosa, orange blossom and linden.

So obviously, this is quite a complex fragrance, as it incorporates the powerful elements of musk, combined with the lighter floral scents. I must admit, that I cannot detect all of these individual scents, when I apply the perfume. I can certainly detect the violet when I first apply it, which for some, can be a bit of a “granny” smell, but I really like the sweetness of the violet, giving it an almost edible quality (think parma violet sweets!). I can’t detect any orange scent, which I would have expected, but when the perfume has been on the skin a couple of hours, the deeper, warmer, musky scents really start to come through, though the violet stands its ground and is still the dominant scent.

I was only 20 when I first started wearing this perfume, and I suppose it is the closest thing I have to a “Signature scent”. I think though, that this is a perfume aimed at an older market than women in their 20’s , and is more suited to women in their 30’s and over, as it is very classy, sensual and confident, but not my idea of a youthful fragrance. I imagine the wearer to be someone confident in their own skin, who has experienced life enough to know exactly what they want out of it. The perfume is romantic and playful, but definitely has a sexy, seductive edge.

In summary, Paris is a very special scent for me. One whiff of the heady scent has the power to transport me back in time and evoke some very happy memories. It sits quite unassumingly on my dressing table, not as showy as some of the other bottles, but out of them all, this one occupies a rather special place in my heart. Having been to Paris, I think that the creator of this scent has perfectly captured the very essence of the city in a bottle, as it is exactly what you expect Paris to be like, romantic, beautiful, classy and memorable
