Spa review: The Langham Sydney is the perfect place to slip away

It doesn’t matter if you’re Chrissy Teigen or an average Joe, everyone experiences an ugly day. It starts in the morning and you’re aware of your newfound Hunchback of Notre Dame status before even looking in the mirror. Is there a science behind it?

Who knows, but it’s universal. And I was experiencing one as I entered The Langham Sydney[1]. Now, The Langham isn’t the type of place you want to visit on an ugly day, mainly because it’s ever so pretty, with its grand marble-floor lobby, art work and chic baby pink-themed interiors.

Luckily for every guest, I was straight into the lift and down into the basement. Not because of my ugliness, that’s just where the spa is located.

The lobby at The Langham The Day Spa by Chuan[2] at The Langham in Sydney is special.

The pool has won awards, is a favourite on Pinterest and is truly spectacular in real life. It’s like swimming in heaven, with stars in the darkened roof twinkling down on the low-lit lap pool and Jacuzzi. There’s also a steam room and gym, so ensure you make enough time to enjoy all the facilities.

I was booked in for a massage and a facial. It’s been a while since I’ve had a pampering. When you’re a new mum, the pampering is replaced with just trying to avoid vomit or snot on your clothes.

So, the thought of being slathered with some beautiful products, swimming beneath the stars and having some baby-free time was almost happy tear inducing. And the products are beautiful. Babor[3], a high-end German brand with a deep history spanning 55 years, is used in both the Langham Sydney and Melbourne. My therapist tells me they are retrained regularly as the products evolve constantly, getting better and better.

We start with the soothing aromatherapy massage, choosing an oil to help relieve stress and tension. It’s been a while since I’ve had a relaxing massage, usually opting for a Thai massage, which often feels similar to physical fight. I accidentally jerk awake, unsure when I fell asleep.

Supplied The next step is the facial. She kindly tells me skin is in dire need of some TLC, and those pesky post-pregnancy hormones are to blame.

The products used in the Babor Spa Facial are personalised, ensuring your skin problems are treated individually. Congestion is the main issue, so we use a repair cleanser, detoxifying vitamin cream and a Dr Babor retina A serum. My favourite product was a detox algae mask, which jellified when brushed onto the face and was then peeled off in one big chewy chunk.

It was bizarrely satisfying. As she worked away, gently massaging miracle cream after miracle cream, I can feel the ugliness slowly dissipate. I can tell before even looking in the mirror that my skin is glowing.

There’s not many times I take a make-up free selfie but my skin looked so fresh and plump after the treatment that it truly warranted it.

And I returned to The Langham lobby with a bit more confidence and a strut in my step.
