Former X Factor winner Alexandra Burke shone on stage with her delightful portrayal of Deloris Van Cartier in one of the most feel-good musicals Sister Act, which earned a standing ovation on its opening night at The Bristol Hippodrome.

Burke took to the stage last night (Monday) in the theatre adaptation of the popular film, which starred Woopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith – and it was a triumph from start to finish. This show was directed and choreographed by Strictly Come Dancing Judge Craig Revel Horwood and his expertise shone through as the seamless production flowed exceptionally.

The story follows Deloris’ colourful life, which takes a nasty turn when she witnesses a murder. In order to protect her from her killer boyfriend, police place her in a convent, where she makes some unlikely friends and introduces her sisters to the joy of music.

While Burke was the star of this show – and rightly so – what was particularly impressive was the strength of the performance as an ensemble. Each and every nun was hilarious in her own way and they all had powerful voices which were slowly revealed throughout the performance. Burke’s voice is undeniably good.

Her vocal range has always been apparent throughout her successful pop career, but watching her belt out songs like Fabulous! and Raise Your Voice is indescribable. I was blown away by the strength and power in her voice and she also portrayed the over-the-top but loveable character with ease. Another stand-out performer, though, was her love interest Eddie.

Joe Vetch took on the role and his awkward yet sensitive character made me want him to finally get the girl.

His voice was also impressive and for him to get one of his biggest cheers during the encore said it all.

What was really lovely about this show, was that at the end, every single person was out of their seat and dancing along to the final song. But, not only that, this carried on as we left the theatre, which is what live performances are all about. I would urge anyone to go and see this show, not only for a flawless vocal performance from one of the X Factor’s biggest success stories, but for an evening which will make you laugh and have the song Fabulous! (which is definitely my favourite) in your head all night long.
